Zebra Photographs: What sort of photographs were these prints, which caused so much commotion? Just plain, straightforward itographs. But such photographs! Different from the photographs usually seen at the exhibitions? Yes. How different? There's the rub. If you could see them for yourself, you would at once appreciate their difference.
The quagga bore a close resemblance to Burchell's zebra photographs and to Hartmann's mountain zebra photographs. The animal was highly gregarious, the herds often numbering several hundred individuals. It was quick and active in its movements and liked to associate with ostriches and white-tailed gnu. Herds had the habit of traveling in single file. The flesh was much esteemed by Kaffirs and bushmen, so that the quagga was hunted unremittingly. One of its principal enemies was the Cape lion (also now extinct). The quagga was easily broken to harness. A pair was driven in Hyde Park, London, early in the 19th century.
