VELES, ve'les, a city in southern Yugoslavia, in the republic of Macedonia. It is situated on the Vardar River, 30 miles southeast of Skopje, and is a center of the silk industry. Since 1945 the official name has been Titov Veles. The city has preserved much of its old Turkish character. Points of interest include the church of St. Pante-leimon and the monastery of St. Demetrius. Pop. (1963) 29,000.
