Unusual Portrait:

Unusual Portrait This successful portrait photographer has done something which anyone planning to sell his pictures to the local inhabitants of a strange town always should do, and that is to make his trailer highly conspicuous. He bought an unusual portrait-looking trailer to begin with, and then proceeded to have it liberally adorned with Signs in bold letters advertising his profession.

The arts, in general, are looked upon favorably as the settings for features. Odd or unusual portrait occupations will be accepted almost automatically as feature picture subjects. In fact, anything odd or unusual portrait in any way is almost certain to click with the editor, provided of course that you cover it with a set of good pictures which point up strongly the odd or unusual portrait aspects of your subject. Anything dramatic, too, is sure to be accepted if your pictures underline the drama.

However, although a long focal length lens is mandatory, it need not be expensive. The utmost of critical sharpness in a portrait lens is not necessary, or even desired, since considerable diffusion can be tolerated in portrait negatives. Your lens needn't be in a shutter for strictly studio portraits, either. A lens in barrel is perfectly satisfactory, since you can provide yourself with a simple Packard shutter to use behind the lens. Many portrait men actually prefer the Packard to the more costly between-the-lens shutters.
