Theatrical Portrait: Standard portrait equipment, provided you have room enough in the studio and sufficient Lighting facilities to cover i-full-figure poses, will do the job required for theatrical portraiture. Standard portrait procedvires, however, will not.
Shooting a good portrait of the entertainer is just one-fourth of the job. Beyond that you must shoot a bathing suit shot which is a good example of pinup technique, the casual pseudo-candid which should pass muster as a fashion shot, and finally the most difficult of all, the picture which ideally captures a talent on film.
Good salesmanship is so important that it might be worth your while to consider taking on just the right man as a partner, to do all the selling and bookkeeping and handling of reorders and all other business details, so that you would be free to concentrate altogether on the creative and artistic end of the portrait partnership. If you are able to find a really good businessman for a partner, you may be sure that he will contribute his full share to the success of your enterprise. Financial success in the portrait field these days is, in the final analysis, probably more a matter of merchandising than of photography.
Theatrical portraiture has always been a fascinating and profitable field for photographers situated in the principal centers of population, particularly Hollywood and New York, but recently the field has expanded with explosive force. The expanding influence has been, of course, television.
In the past, the attractive theatrical portraiture field has been cornered by perhaps a dozen specialists who knew exactly how to produce the required pictures. Now, this monopoly is broken because the old established specialists would be hard put to handle the present demand, and because theatrical pictures are needed now in every city all over the country wherever live television programs are originated. |
