Sur Face Water: If the ball lies in casual water, such as rainwater, on the green, the player may remove it from the water and place it immediately nearby but not closer to the hole. If he finds his ball in casual water anywhere else on the course, he may lift it and drop it beside the water. (When a ball is dropped, the player must face the flagstick and let the ball fall directly behind him over his shoulder. He plays it from the spot where it comes to rest.)
WATER STRIDER, any member of the family Gerridae of the order Hemiptera. They are also known as water skippers and pond skaters. They have a chunky thorax and the abdomen is long and narrow in the freshwater species, short and narrowed apically in the marine forms. All are somber colored. They get their name from the fact that both adults and nymphs swim about the sur face waterface of water with a very efficient but jerky motion.
GRASS will not grow well in waterlogged soil. Its roots need air as well as moisture. The ideal is a film of water sur face waterrounding each soil particle and air in the spaces between. It is as though you dipped a bunch of grapes in oil or molasses, lifted it out and held it to drain. Around each grape a film of the liquid clings, even after draining, but there are considerable air spaces between the individual grapes. Except in swamps and bogs where free-standing water is at (or close to) the sur face waterface, this is the condition that normally exists in the upper soil. But if you dig down deep enough you will, unless you hit bed-rock first, come to a level below which the spaces between the soil particles are filled with water. The top of this free standing water—its sur face waterface, is the water table. Holes you dig fill with water to this level. |
