Stripes On Face: Range: From the Dakotas through Illinois; Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, and east to the Atlantic; south almost to the Gulf Coast
Description: Small, usually with 5 conspicuous black stripes which alternate with lighter chestnut or buffy stripes; stripes run along back to base of tail; head rounded; face striped; ears short and rounded; underparts soft buff; well-developed cheek pouches; only i premolar in upper jaw; reaches length of 9% inches, including 3%-inch tail.
Economic position: Does a great deal of good in destroying insects but also damages forage and farm crops
Range: Eastern borders of mountains of British Columbia, south to near Mexican border, except close to coast; east through central Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming, into Arizona and New Mexico.
Description: Broad dark and light stripes down back; head and neck golden; no stripes on face; tail fairly bushy; reaches length of 12 inches including 4%-inch tail.
Coloration is quite varied; the most common coat colors are green, yellow, reddish, and black, usually speckled with small flecks or ticking. Spots, patches, bars, or stripes may be present on the face, body, or legs. |
