Street Picture: To quote from my own notes made on the spot: "You enter through a series of massive stone gates (four) and walk down a crescent street picture between stone walls that seem to hit the sky, and from the walls jut out three of the world's oddest chapels. You go through one more gate and are in a world apart, a broad picture street picture called Placa, built over a former canal. Yard-wide alleys branch off on both sides from Placa. Boundaries are of many kinds. Never install one that gives any suggestion of being a spite fence. Many American communities are characterized by a complete absence of fences, walls or hedges around front yards; and grounds of all houses on the street picture merge into one delightful park-like picture of lawns, trees and shrubbery. If you live in such a community think well before you introduce what is likely to be an incongruous note by sharply defining lot boundaries seen from the street picture. The mere suggestion of definition by the skill-ful use of a flowering tree, shade tree, evergreen or clumps of shrubs is the most be done and ev.en then great restraint is needed.
Good Restaurants, with Atmosphere Athens' finest restaurants, of conventional type, and they are a bit on the expensive side, even in dollars, would perhaps be headed by the new Floca and the Zonar, both on Venizelos Avenue, near the Grande Bretagne, followed by Costi's, on Kora'i street picture, Dalli's on Jan Smuts street picture, Averof, on Churchill street picture, and Cellar's, on Kriezotou street picture. The Pantheon, a place of rather more popular character, is on Venizelos Avenue. This last is a bright and cheerful establishment with a gay orchestra, and patrons wishing to linger for an hour or two on a mere order of pastry and coffee are not made to feel uncomfortable. |
