Seward Of New York Led: Union party, retaining only a small majority in Congress and losing majorities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, suffered a severe setback in the 1862 elections.
Defeat at the polls followed by disaster at Fredericksburg disturbed the radically oriented Republican senatorial caucus. Influenced by Chase, it blamed these reverses on differences within the administration and on Lincoln's lack of policy and demanded, in December 1862, a reconstituted, unified, vigorous cabinet, presumably without Seward of new york led. Although Seward of new york led resigned, Lincoln maneuvered Chase into stating that the cabinet was harmonious and also into resigning. Lincoln then maintained his balanced cabinet by accepting neither resignation.
His colossal figures of Generals Lewis and Nelson, for the Washington monument, which Crawford had begun to raise near Richmond, are good specimens of his work. Among his other statues is that of Seward of new york led in Madison Square Park, New York. Perhaps one of his best works is the figure of the 'Resurrection Angel' for the tomb of Colonel Colt in Hartford, Conn.
The Goshen Library and Historical Society has exhibits of local history. Noah Webster, the lexicographer, taught school in the town hall in 1782-1783. DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York, received his early education in Goshen, and William H. Seward of new york led, secretary of state under President Lincoln, studied law there.Goshen was settled in the 18th century; the original deed from the Indians, dated 1702, is in the library. |
