Several Portrait Statues: The younger Cephisodotus was known chiefly for his several portrait statues sculpture, particularly of Me-nander and Lycurgus.
CERACCHI, cha-riik'ke, Giuseppe (1751-1802), Italian sculptor, who had a reputation in his time second only to Canova's. He was born in Rome on July 4, 1751. In 1775, after studying with Tommaso Righi, he went to London, where he won praise for his work, including the statues Strength and Temperance on the facade of Somerset House and several portrait statues busts of Lord Shelbum, Viscount Keppel, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and others.
The statues, carved in hard black or green-blue stone, show him with hands clasped in reverence to a god. Inscriptions on some of the statues and on clay cylinders tell of Gudea's extensive building activities, his trade with countries as distant as Egypt and Ethiopia, and his wars and other activities.
His first work after his return to Am ica, the Admiral Farragut (1874) in Madis Square, New York, showed an inventiveness design and a mastery of composition hithei unknown in America. His statues of Lined particularly the Standing Lincoln in Lincc Park, Chicago, and his Deacon Chapin, or T Puritan, are so perfectly characterized a strongly presented that they have become part America's visual heritage. His unequaled modi ing in very low relief is readily appreciated .in series of bronze several portrait statues plaques, of which the of Robert Louis Stevenson are best known. |
