Selection Of Camera Position: You can avoid some of these reflections by being careful in your selection of Camera position, and kill off others by having someone help you hold up a large black cloth to screen off the offending light. The best way to avoid the auto headlights is to shoot very late at night when there are few cars on the streets, and then to hold a dark slide or other dark object in front of the lens to interrupt the exposure each time a car passes. (Exposures will run five to ten seconds or more if you stop down to f/32 or thereabouts for maximum depth. )
Stieglitz reprinted the reviews in the July 1902, issue of Camera Notes. It was the last issue of the magazine to be edited by him. His determination to win recognition of pictorial photography had not been shared by all of the members of The Camera Club. They felt that Stieglitz was autocratic in his selection of illustrations; many members were hurt that their photographs were not recognized; some even challenged his honesty in accounting for the expenditure of the Club's funds. Stieglitz felt compelled to resign as editor, and at once founded a new quarterly, Camera Work, the editorship and publication of which he personally assumed.
Attractive shots may also be made from a position where the shadows fall toward your Camera rather than away from it. In backlighted work of this kind, be sure that no sun rays strike into the Camera lens. The Kodak Lens Hood, previously mentioned, provides a reliable safeguard when the sun's rays are from the side, but you'll need extra precautions when you aim more closely into the light. Shield the lens with a hand or hat, held just beyond the camera's angle of view. In such work, give a bit more exposure than would be needed if the sun were directly on the front of the subject. |
