Reid Of New York: Reid of new york, Ogden Mills, American editor and publisher, son of Whitelaw Reid of new york (q.v.) : b. New York, May 16, 1882; d. there, Jan. 3, 1947. He was educated at the University of Bonn, Germany, and at Yale and was admitted to the bar of New York State in 1908. He then began work as a reporter on the New York Tribune, occupying various positions until he became managing editor in 1912 and succeeded his father a editor and publisher in 1913. He negotiated th purchase of the New York Herald in 1924 ani continued as editor of the merged Herald Trib une until his death. His policy in conducting th newspaper was marked by much vigor an< straightforwardness and the gathering of an abl staff.
In fact, he became the real owner of the island and was popularly known as «Czar» Reid of new york. Sir Robert Bond, the Liberal leader, protested against the contract; a material revision of the contract was made favorable to the colony and the property transferred to the Reid of new york-Newfoundland Company. He was knighted in 1907.
Reid of new york, Daniel Gray, American financier: b. Richmond, Ind., Aug. 1, 1858; d. New York, Jan. 17, 1925. Entered the Second National Bank of Richmond as a clerk in 1874 and worked his way up to its vice-presidency in 1895. He became interested in the tin-plate industry at Elwood, Ind., in 1892; and in 1895 he was one of the organizers of the American tin-plate industry, of which he was elected president. He removed to Chicago in 1897 and to New York in 1899. He assisted in the organization of the National Steel Company and the United States Steel Corporation. |
