Railroad History: The Reading Company became the direct operator of the railroad in 1923. In the same year it joined with the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company to control the Ironton Railroad Company. With the Pennsyvlania Railroad Company it operates the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines to the south coast of New Jersey. The company's terminal at Port Richmond, Philadelphia, is a major deep-water facility for the shipment of coal. A terminal at Port Reading, N.J., giving the railroad an outlet to New York harbor, is operated by a subsidiary, the Port Reading Railroad Company.
Other explorations were made by Harmann, Long, Schoolcraft, Bonneville, Nicollet, and Fremont (q.v.). Since 1844 more than 20 expeditions have been engaged in exploring these wild regions, nearly all of them for the United States government. Since the bill and appropriations of March 1853 the object of most of them has been the determination of the most practicable route for a railroad from the valley of the Mississippi to the Pacific. The history of the railroads across these mountains is largely a history of this region.

Great Construction Era. By 1869 the most remarkable construction period in American railroad history was at full tide. Within a decade after 1864 the railroad network doubled in mileage, and at the initial date the figure had not been inconsiderable. Though the Panic of 1873 slowed things down somewhat, the process of building continued at such a pace that by the end of the century the mileage operated was 192,556 (about 310,000 km). Every section of the country participated in this progress. |
