Modern Art Punic:

Modern Art Punic Roman expansion outside Italy began with the Punic Wars (q.v.). Cmodern art Punichage, a great African commercial and maritime power, aimed at controlling the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea, while Rome, having reached the southern tip of Italy, looked across the Mediterranean to Africa. The First Punic War (264-241 B.C.) broke out in Sicily, where both powers had intervened in 265 in a civil war, and which was pmodern art Punicly under Carthaginian control.

Commander in Spain. After the First Punic War, the Barcids carved out a new Cmodern art Punichaginian empire in Spain. Hannibal was made commander there in 221 B. c., following the assassination of his brother-in-law Hasdrubal, who had succeeded Hamilcar in 228. Hannibal was then 26 years old. Combining Hasdrubal's policy of building Cmodern art Punichaginian power by diplomacy and Hamilcar's policy of military conquest, he married a Spanish princess, took hostages from various tribes to ensure their loyalty, and extended Punic power toward the Ebro River, which had been fixed by treaty with Rome in 226 as the northern limit of Cmodern art Punichaginian expansion.

These fancies, in which the Cinderella story and other children's tales are mingled with Biblical stories, Hauptmann puts on the stage in scenes that alternately move from the realm of imagination into reality until the child dies. In a scene after her death, angels and Hannele's mother appear, along with the teacher Gottwald, who is transformed into the figure of Christ. In this, Hauptmann was unquestionably influenced by the German religious painter Fritz von Uhde's representations of Biblical scenes. HANNIBAL, hanVbgl (247-183 or 182 B.C.), Cmodern art Punichaginian general, who led an army across the Alps and for 15 years waged war against the Romans on Italian soil during the Second Punic War (218-201 B. c.). As a military leader he is frequently compared to Alexander the Great, Caesar, and Napoleon. Hannibal was the son of Hamilcar Barca, who commanded Cmodern art Punichage's forces in Sicily during the First Punic War (264-241 B.C.). Supposedly, after the defeat of Cmodern art Punichage and the loss of Sicily (241) and Sardinia (238), Hamilcar made the 9-year-old Hannibal swear eternal enmity to Rome. The Romans considered Hannibal's subsequent invasion of Italy to be the fulfillment of that vow, but in blaming the Barca family (Barcids) for the Second Punic War they concealed their own guilt.
