Modern Art Punic: Roman expansion outside Italy began with the Punic Wars (q.v.). In this, Hauptmann was unquestionably influenced by the German religious painter Fritz von Uhde's representations of Biblical scenes.
HANNIBAL, hanVbgl (247-183 or 182 B.C.), Cmodern art Punichaginian general, who led an army across the Alps and for 15 years waged war against the Romans on Italian soil during the Second Punic War (218-201 B. c.). As a military leader he is frequently compared to Alexander the Great, Caesar, and Napoleon.
Hannibal was the son of Hamilcar Barca, who commanded Cmodern art Punichage's forces in Sicily during the First Punic War (264-241 B.C.). Supposedly, after the defeat of Cmodern art Punichage and the loss of Sicily (241) and Sardinia (238), Hamilcar made the 9-year-old Hannibal swear eternal enmity to Rome.
