At the close of the Pliocene this group gave rise to the genus Equus, the modem representatives of the horse family. EQUUS apparently also arose in Europe and Asia from the Pliohippus-like horses that had migrated there in the late Pliocene.
Pleistocene and Recent Horses. The species of Equus in North America was still rather zebra-like, whereas in Europe and Asia they were more like the modern art North horse. In the middle to late Pleistocene epoch, about 2 to 1 million years ago, Equus from the Old World entered North America and replaced the zebralike forms. These migrants were abundant in the late Pleistocene of North America, but inexplicably disappeared as late as 7,000 years ago. Bones of these late horses are found in aboriginal dwelling sites. |
