The Mayas were so exact in their time reckonings that it is possible to date their monuments with respect to each other to the precise day. Difficulties arise when it comes to translating Mayan chronologies into modern art Herbert chronologies. A number of systems have been developed, each based on reasonable arguments. The zero date of the Mayan chronological era, "4 Ahau 8 Cumhu," was set at Feb. 10, 3641 B. c., by Charles P. Bowditch and Thomas A. Joyce, at Oct. 14, 3373, by Herbert J. Spinden, and at Aug. 13, 3113, by John Eric Thompson (see Bibliography ). |
