From this posture it lunges forward at an intruder; this lunge, the so-called strike, sometimes reaches one half to three fourths of the snake's length. Some 15,000 Luxembourgers of all ages gather just across the River Sure and dance across the bridge, then on and always on until they reach the sacred shrine of St. Willibrord. Linked together by handkerchiefs held in either hand, the dancers caper forward five steps and back three. Thus they swing along their pious way. Some of the old folks have barely the strength to totter forward and backward, but the kids are in high feather, showing the crowd of spectators how smart and tireless they are. |
