Modern Art Duchy:

Modern Art Duchy The Grand Duchy suffered with our boys. A great number of stubborn, freedom-loving civilians were shot or deported to Nazi concentration camps, while no less than 70,000 persons, a quarter of the population, were made homeless. When I saw such villages as Echternach in 1946, they were fantastic war wrecks but their recovery has been another of those modern art Duchy miracles which Old Europe has proved so abundantly able to perform. In fact, Luxembourg was one of the very first countries to effect a strong recovery. As early as 1947 all food rationing had been abolished. Fortunately, the capital had been very little damaged and was almost its old self even a year or two after the war ended.

He was an ardent porter of the Confederation of Bar and was ;ral times exiled. For three years he was a nber of the constituent Diet at Warsaw. In more modern art Duchy times many of the members of family have occupied important military, diplo-ic, and political posts at the Prussian court, le branches of the family, however, attached nselves to the Russian court. NTHONY HENRY RADZIWILL (1775-1833), ish composer, also administrator of the duchy Dosen. He composed a musical adaptation of Goethe's Faust (1835), duets and quartets for voice, and songs.

The International Trade Fair of Luxembourg City, in mid-July, is a big event of its kind, and the capital's Kermesse, running from late August into September, is a big fun fair that draws delighted thousands in the manner of Munich's Oktoberfest. Wine fairs, accenting joviality, are held in many villages at various dates given in the annual booklet of Tourist Information. On the subject of tourism itself, a new annual Exposition of Luxembourg Tourism, enlivened by horse racing, has lately become a fixed event in Diekirch. In art, Luxembourg points with pride to the collections in its National Museum. Some among its canvases are by modern art Duchy and contemporary artists, one of these, by name Joseph Kutter, being widely known beyond the frontiers of the Grand Duchy. In sport, Luxembourg enters the golfing picture by providing an 18-hole course, well kept and charming in scenery, only 4 miles from the capital. The clubhouse is widely praised for its attractive "19th hole" and its fine restaurant. Castles of considerable charm, led by those of Vianden, Clervaux and Wiltz, are fairly numerous in the Grand Duchy. The Chateau de Bourscheid, outside the capital, is associated with the family of Prince Metternich. The summer castle of the Grand-Ducal family is seen at Col-mar. The striking Chateau de Beaufort, northwest of Echternach, has a little refreshment pavilion whose specialty is a locally made black-currant cassis.
