Modern Art Culty: Under its first president, William Rainey Har-T, the present university began classes in 1892 ith 594 students and 103 faculty members. By i50 the student body numbered 9,266, and the culty stood at 803. In the mid-1960's there 3re about 11,500 students, including 6,100 aduate and professional students, and there were 1,100 full-time faculty members.
First, it confirmed the shift towards that consumerism which was becoming so marked a feature of the system: schools were now obliged to listen to and, to some extent, were fashioned by their more vocal and committed parents. While this may have been in many ways a good thing, what was less desirable was that this process gave undue influence to schools in middle-class areas where there was little difficulty in recruiting parents who were often well connected within the local professions and who knew how to lobby effectively and how best to organise.
The final consonants -b, -d, -g, and -r were dropped, and final semivowels appeared, to form diphthongs with the main vowel. The number of tones increased to four. In the majority of the modern art culty Chinese dialects there are usually only two grades of consonants (p and p') and, as we have noted, three consonant endings (-n, -ng, and a modern art culty -r).
