Magnificent Picture: It was hailed as "a magnificent picture, decidedly the finest photograph of its class ever produced."7 Rejlander considered it an example of the camera's usefulness to artists, in making a first sketch for an elaborate composition, and said that he could think of no other subject which would enable him better to portray "various draped figures as well as exhibit the beautiful lines of the human form."8 The nudity was not universally accepted; only the righteous half of the photograph was shown at the annual exhibition of the Edinburgh Photographic Society.
The annual ornamental grasses are usually grown for their seed panicles—flowers are there but they are minute and hardly noticeable—many of which dry beautifully for winter bouquets. Leaves of these grasses are usually not too showy.
The perennials have magnificent and varied foliage, with all shades of green, blue, and variegations of cream, white, gold, or a host of tans, in addition to notable seed heads.
On the opposite page is Ravenna grass, one of the stars in the grass garden and magnificent even in a northern garden.
The advantages to the buyer are obvious. Does it seem like a bad arrangement for the photographer? At first glance it might seem so, but when this same picture is sold over and over, perhaps fifty times in the course of years, the photographer eventually realizes a handsome total return for his effort in shooting the picture for stock sales.
That's why the stock picture photographer doesn't get rich quick, but enjoys a long-term income advantage for his work. Many a picture has earned, over a period of years, more than $1,000 in fees. |
