London Camera Club: The Club der Amateur-Photo-graphen in Vienna (later named the Wiener Kamera Klub), the Gessellschaft zur Forderung der Amateur Photographic (Society for Promoting Amateur Photography) in Hamburg, the Photo-Club de Paris, the Camera Qub of London Camera Club, the Society of Amateur Photographers of New York, and the New York Camera Club were i institutions of an importance far beyond the usual mea ing of the word "club." Their members were overwhek ingly those amateurs who were referred to in the pre as "serious" or "advanced."
Stieglitz reprinted the reviews in the July 1902, issue of Camera Notes. It was the last issue of the magazine to be edited by him. His determination to win recognition of pictorial photography had not been shared by all of the members of The Camera Club. They felt that Stieglitz was autocratic in his selection of illustrations; many members were hurt that their photographs were not recognized; some even challenged his honesty in accounting for the expenditure of the Club's funds. Stieglitz felt compelled to resign as editor, and at once founded a new quarterly, Camera Work, the editorship and publication of which he personally assumed.
Of restaurant guides published in France, that of the Club des Sans-Club (Club of the Clubless) is among the best. Where to Dine in London Camera Club and Paris (with street maps), by M. L. Bernhardt (The Ram's Head Press, London Camera Club) is a handy booklet on gourmetry purchasable in overseas bookstores. TWA, in its excellent nearly-free booklet Travel Tips for France, has a dependable list, as long as Buchwald's, of atmospheric restaurants, including not only the famous temples of French epicurean ism, but garden restaurants for alfresco dining, seafood specialists and round-the-world restaurants of Paris for the food of all nations. |
