London Bankers: In 1851, commanding the Witchcraft, a new clipper of 1,310 tons, he made the same voyage in 103 days, next to the shortest passage made to that time. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted and held several naval commands. He was a lieutenant commander when he resigned from the service in July, 1866. In 1865, Harvard awarded him the A.B. degree. A silent partner in the Boston branch of the London bankers, J. S. Morgan and Company, he was also instrumental in organizing the Eastern Railroad Company.
The incessant wars of conquest which made Rome the ruler over the entire Mediterranean orbit, led to a tremendous accumulation of wealth in the hands of the senatorial nobility and of the growing class of bankers, tax farmers, and merchants (the equestrian order), who exploited the subjected territories.
