Intracellular Gram -negative: The combination of urethritis and the presence of intracellular gram -negative gram-negative diplococci in smears of exudate from the urethra are good indications of gonorrhea. Confirmation of the presence of the disease is obtained by culturing the organisms.
Gonorrhea is often asymptomatic in the female, and the diagnosis should be suspected in any female contact of an infected male. Chronic carriers of gonococci are difficult to detect. In the suspected male carrier the secretions of the prostate should be examined as well as those of the urethra.
RAMICIDIN, gram-a-sid'an, is an antibiotic iat is one of the components of tyrothricin, the rst antibiotic used clinically. Gramicidin is articularly effective against the growth of gram-asitive bacteria such as pneumococci, strep-icocci, staphylococci, and diphtheria bacilli, hile tyrocidine—the other component of tyrothri-n—is also active against gram-negative bacteria.
Gram stained bacteria with a solution of gentian violet in aniline water, treated it with an aqueous solution of iodine and potassium iodide, and washed it in alcohol.
