Unique Home Furniture, Home Decorating and Home Decoration Store
Inaugural Exhibition In 1932: It was a violent reaction to the weak, sentimental style then popular with pictorial photographers in California, as seen particularly in the anecdotal, highly sentimental, mildly erotic hand-colored prints of William Mortensen. The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco presented the group's inaugural exhibition in 1932. For a few years the informal society was the most progressive in America. Even after they disbanded, their influence persisted; "//64" came to be a convenient label for straight photography, and was applied to photographers who had nothing to do with the original group.
There are photos too of the 'incident' that added drama to the opening of the bridge in 1932 when Captain Francis De Groot, disguised as a military horseman, rode up and slashed the ribbon with his sword before Premier Lang could do the honours. Bradfield's Bridge was opened on 22 November by Peter Lalor, author of the recently published book The Bridge. The exhibition can be viewed in the Rare Books Library, on level 2.
This exhibition draws on his archive of 40,000 negatives in the RIBA British Architectural Library Photographs Collection.
The exhibition will take place between 10 March - 22 April 2006. |
