History Of Maryland: In the latter capacity he acted as counsel for the people in all matters coming before the comission, until he resigned in 1913, and returned to private practice. Long before he had won recognition as one of the leaders of the Baltimore Bar, having inherited his legal talents from his father, Judge Albert Ritchie, one of the ablest jurists ever to sit on the Maryland bench. In 1915 he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney-General of Maryland, and in the fall was elected by the largest plurality ever received up to that time by any candidate for a State office in the history of Maryland, running over 30,000 votes ahead of his ticket.

In 1919 he was nominated and elected Governor of Maryland. Four years later he was renominated and re-elected, being the first Governor of Maryland to succeed himself since the Civil War. Thereafter he was thrice re-nominated and twice re-elected, suffering his first and only defeat in the fall of 1934. He was frequently mentioned for the Presidency. |
