Hese Picture Factories: In England Francis Frith opened the largest of hese picture factories in I860, on his return from Egypt. t his Reigate factory he had a stock of more than a nillion prints. Similar publishing companies were estab-ished in Scotland by George Washington Wilson and fames Valentine. Contact prints on gold-toned albumen saper were made in vast quantities: over a thousand 8 x 24-inch sheets of paper were sensitized in every working day.
There were in 1950, approximately 1,700 registered factories in the state, employing a total of 85,000 workers. Most of these, however were employed in small fagtories with between 30 and 100 workers. There were, in 1950, 5 Textile mills, 150 cloth-weaving factories, 24 woolen mills, 2 cement factories, and numerous steel re-rolling mills, machine-tool factories, and factories making agricultural implements.

Miscellaneous factories. Among the other types of English porcelains were those produced at Longton Hall, Coalport, Liverpool, Rockingham, Pinxton, Nantgarw, and Swansea. Many of these smaller factories were started by former employees of the larger organizations, and their output was similar in quality and design to that of the factories where their owners had served apprenticeships. |
