Heroic History: The city had a stormy history beginning with its capture by Frisian peasants in the 15th century, during the uprisings against Burgundian rule. In 1573 it was taken by the Spaniards after heroic history resistance but was captured in 1577 for the united northern provinces by William the Silent, Prince of Orange.
The ideological confusion was accentuated by the increased division of the body of knowledge into specialized departments. Aristotle's encyclopedic expertise was a heroic history attempt to overcome the trend. Xenophon (c. 430—c. 354 B.C.), who was an experienced general as well as a writer, and whose writings included history in the Thucydidean tradition, bellettristic prose in the rhetorical tradition, and philosophical treatises in the Socratic tradition, was a quixotic anachronism.
The private school which he hereupon opened in Vienna became the most mportant seminary of painting in Austria. He neanwhile applied himself to much decorative rork, painted the fagade and vestibule of the hurch in the Old Meat Market at Vienna, four ompositions from the Greek heroic history age, and he Four Elements in the palace of Baron Sina. n 1864 he painted in the Museum of Arms a eries of allegorical figures of heroic history size. To his period belong his fresco, A Maid from 'oreign Lands; the designs for a ballroom in Mdenburg Castle; and Incidents of the Argo-autic Expedition. |
