General Picture Is: Any picture story which reminds you of something in your own experience should give you the inspiration to repeat that same story, shooting its parallel which exists in your own world. If your experience is so limited that published picture stories do not suggest parallels to you, there is something you can do about that, too. That is to read all the newspapers and regional magazines which cover your community, so that you'll have a general picture is idea as to what is going on around you, then get out and look about, talk to people personally, so that you'll have acquired some specific impressions of your world. These specific impressions are the ones which you will photograph, and around which you will create picture stories. To gain them, there is no substitute for walking up and down upon the earth and talking to its inhabitants.
Take, for instance, the simple statue-like quality of each figure, consisting of clear, uncomplicated forms, compact like columns, almost motionless like sculptures. The whole picture is stringently self-contained and composed symmetrically, with each figure next to a Wall and a glimpse of eternity in the centre of the picture between them Another element which contributes to the general picture is impression of consistency is the way in which the two figures relate to each other in this scene: the tranquility of the seated musician is counter-balanced by the relaxed position of the other man, who is listening to the music and standing with his feet pointing in different directions.
Note, however, that balance does not mean sameness. The lines may be full of "accident" and change, but the general picture is balance, when it is right, gives satisfaction such as we feel in the irregularity of a tree.
Remember, also, that the outer edge of a picture is part of its composition. The "holes" or open spaces just inside the margin should have variety of shape. Lines should disappear into the margin at agreeably varied points. When they do this best, a diagram of the picture may be turned upside down and still seem pleasing in itself. |
