Funeral Photographs: The Choctaw society was split into two divisions, which ruled, respectively, during war and peace. Little is known about these, but it is thought that they corresponded to the Red and White divisions of neighboring tribes, such as the Cherokee. Each division had the role of handling funeral photographs duties for members of the opposite division. Choctaw funeral photographs practices were elaborate. Bodies were wrapped in skins and left outdoors, sometimes on a scaffold, until most of the flesh was gone.
What sort of photographs were these prints, which caused so much commotion? Just plain, straightforward itographs. But such photographs!
