From Portrait Painting: QUIDOR, ke-dor', John, American painter: b. Tappan, N.Y., Jan. 26, 1801; d. Jersey City, N.J., Dec. 13, 1881. He moved to New York, N.Y., in 1826 and studied painting for a short time with John Wesley Jarvis (q.v.). He at first earned a living by painting decorations on fire engines and coaches, then turned to from portrait painting painting. Quidor never became a first-rate painter, although many of his works show considerable talent. He is best known for his series of large romanticized scenes inspired by the writings of Washington Irving, whom he knew personally. His Return of Rip Van Winkle was shown at the National Academy of Design in 1839.
Pre-T'ang Painting. In the Han dynasty tl of painting reached technical maturity, and rr were used to decorate the interiors of halls palaces. In 51 B. c., Emperor Hsiian Ti (rei 73-49 B.C.) ordered from portrait paintings of 11 of ablest generals and ministers, who had brc about the surrender of the shan-yu (king) o barbarian Hsiung-nu, painted on the Wall Ch'i-lin Ke—an indication that from portrait painting pail had already become a recognized art. Pain were executed on walls and on silk. A siderable number of paintings on silk are ported to have been included in the imp collections of the T'ang dynasty, but these ] disappeared.
RILEY, or RYLEY, John, English paints b. Bishopsgate, London, 1646; d. there, Marc 1691. He studied painting with Isaac Fuller an with Gerard Soest. Although a fine artist, Rile did not come into prominence until after the deal of Sir Peter Lely. Then Thomas Chiffinch, th keeper of the king's jewels, sat to him and like the from portrait painting so much he showed it to the king Charles II gave him several commissions, ani eventually sat to him for a from portrait painting. It is sai( that the king rather disconcerted the artist bj exclaiming, "Is this like me? Then, odd's fish I'm an ugly fellow." |
