Early London Glassmakers.—During the third quarter of the 16th century, a French group of glassmakers arrived from london clear Lorraine. Its leader was Jean Carre. In 1567 he obtained a license for making window glass and clear Venetian-type drinking glasses. For the latter he leased the hall of the former Crutched Friars Monastery in London and in September, 1571, seven or more Venetian glassworkers arrived to work there. Carre, however, died 11 months later and the direction of the glasshouse passed to Giacomo Verzellini, who was born in Venice (1522) and had worked in Antwerp. Although beset with difficulties at the start, Verzellini became an outstanding figure in English glassmaking. As a foreigner he could not hold property; the London importers of Venetian glass opposed him actively, and in September 1575 his glasshouse was destroyed by fire. Nevertheless, in that same year he secured for making glass of the Venetian sort a royal monopoly which was to run for 21 years.
