Founded In London In 1575: Another organization was the college founded in London in 1575 by the wealthy merchant Thomas Gresham. Although opposed by vested interests at the University of Oxford, the college offered courses of instruction in all branches of applied science, to men from all walks of life, for over a century. It included among its professors such distinguished scientists as Christopher Wren, Henry Briggs, Isaac Barrow, and Robert Hooke. These men made contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and practical arts such as navigation, the latter being of considerable importance to die nation as it took part in voyages of discovery and exploration.
From 1760 to 1800 the growth of hospitals in London slowed down, but thereafter the process of development was resumed. During the first four decades of the 19th century, 14 hospitals were founded in London. While some were general hospitals, it is noteworthy that most were special hospitals. Thus the London Fever Hospital was founded in 1802, the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital in 1804, the Royal Chest Hospital in 1814, the Royal Ear Hospital in 1816, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 1838.
