Fine Art Nude And Erotic Photography: This contribution of photography, which had won the support of Baudelaire, was also praised by Lady Elizabeth Eastlake in her essay "Photography" in the London Quarterly Review for 1857. Her aesthetic could not embrace photography as one of the fine art nude and erotic photography Arts. She wrote:
With his painting "Female Nude and Smoker" (p. 87) of the same year Picasso immortalized "La Belle et la Bete", the Beauty and the Beast. Again, there is a manatthecentrewhoissmokinga pipe. He is bearded, haggard, and crippled, with his head bent forward; but beside him there is a huge nude who is emphatically a body, a subject. The nude model had found her way back into Picasso's studio, but the way in which the two people's eyes meet and their hands touch shows that the act of painting had become a substitute for the act of sexual intercourse.
It was a violent reaction to the weak, sentimental style then popular with pictorial photographers in California, as seen particularly in the anecdotal, highly sentimental, mildly erotic hand-colored prints of William Mortensen. The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco presented the group's inaugural exhibition in 1932. For a few years the informal society was the most progressive in America. Even after they disbanded, their influence persisted; "//64" came to be a convenient label for straight photography, and was applied to photographers who had nothing to do with the original group. |
