Examples Of Fine Art: There were once about 800 stave churches in the whole country and even two centuries ago there were 200, whereas now there are but 20 durable veterans at most. Three fine examples of fine art are "domesticated," as it were, in the outdoor parks of Bygd0y (Oslo), Mai-haugen (Lillehammer) and the Fantoft Church in Bergen's suburb of Fj0sanger. Of the 16 or 17 "wild" churches, three interesting examples of fine art are those at Borgund (near Laerdal); Eidsborg, a hamlet above Dalen, in Telemark; and Heddal, near Notodden, in Telemark. Unfortunately, the last-named was damaged by unintelligent "modernization" about a century ago.
The portfolio must be well-disciplined, showing only your very best work in limited quantities, not more than 20 to 30 examples of fine art, preferably the fewest examples of fine art that will show the range of your work. It is best to try to direct some of the samples toward the kinds of accounts the art director or the advertising manager is involved in. If it is a food account, try to show some examples of fine art of your work with food, not just cars on location or machinery or people.
The language they talk is unfortunate in one respect because it is misleading to the outsider. It gives the impression that the architectural photographer is required to deliver pictures of great artistic merit if he is to be successful. It is perfectly true that the architectural photographer must deliver fine prints, but they must be examples of fine art only of photographic excellence, and if they are that, then the artistic considerations will take care of themselves. |
