Else Face Intervention: The affiliated unions regard the congress as a common purposes committee, not as a federal government, and in practice they reserve their right to act independently in their primary function of protecting the economic interests of their own members. But the prospect of government intervention—whether to regulate wages in the interest of a national incomes policy or in certain circumstances to penalize unions or their members for striking—has prompted the congress to take matters into its own hands to show that the intervention is unnecessary. The T. U. C. council has assumed the function of scrutinizing the wage claims made by affiliated unions and of providing for intervention to check unofficial strikes.
It is also important, taking heed of the quotation by Alexander Herzen at the head of this chapter, that any support and intervention that children may need should be considered secondary to their higher order need to be children, who do childish things - have fun, play and learn. Intervention and specialist help, with the best of intentions, can all too easily override such a priori rights of childhood.
2. Trainee educational psychologists also need to have specific training in the area of DCD. This training too, should focus on the three else face interventionts of identification, assessment and intervention. The Green Paper (p. 68) explicitly states that it anticipates educational psychologists being involved more closely in classroom intervention in the future. If they are to be effective in this role, they will need to increase their knowledge of DCD. Where this does occur, the benefits for educators will be great, because psychologists will also be able to contribute to training close to learning contexts. |
