East-southeast Of London: ROCHESTER, municipal borough, England, situated in Kent County, on the Medway River, just west-northwest of Chatham and 28 miles east-southeast of London. Rochester Cathedral, founded by St. Augustine in 604, was destroyed by the Danes and rebuilt by Bishop Gundulf (beginning in 1082) and others through the 14th century. On a hill overlooking the river are the remains of a castle built by William de Corbeuil, archbishop of Canterbury, in the 12th century.
QIZIL UZUN, ki'zil 6o-zoon', or KIZIL UZEN, ki'zfl ii-zen', river, Iran, located in the northwest. The longest river in the country, it rises southeast of Lake Urmia and flows north and then southeast to Manjil, where it turns northeast to pass through the Elburz Mountains and eventually to reach the Caspian Sea in a wide delta. From Manjil onward the river is known as the Send Rud. The total length is about 450 miles.
RENO RIVER, ra'no, river, Italy, rising in the Etruscan Apennines, eight miles northeast of Pistoia. It flows northward past Bologna (on the east) and Cento, then turns east-southeast, emptying into the Adriatic Sea 13 miles above Ravenna. Its length is 131 miles. Tributaries include the Idice, Sillaro, Santerno, and Senio rivers. The Reno is canalized in its lower course, and is also used for irrigation. |
