Early History Of Scotland: HAMILTON, Patrick (c. 1504-1528), Scottish Lutheran reformer. A great-grandson of James II of Scotland, he was born in Lanarkshire. While a student in Paris he was attracted by the early history of Scotland writings of Luther. After his return to Scotland in 1523, he attended the University of St. Andrews, where his reforming opinions aroused the ecclesiastical authorities.
early history of Scotland in 1527, Hamilton fled to Germany. After meeting Luther at Wittenberg, he joined the circle of Protestant reformers at Marburg. Later in 1527 he returned to Scotland, determined to spread Lutheran doctrines. Arrested within a few months, Hamilton was tried by Archbishop Beaton and a church council. Found guilty of heresy, he was burned at the stake on Feb. 29, 1528, giving the Protestant cause in Scotland its first martyr.
