Direct Camera Records: Although most photographers found the practice "detestable and costly," to quote Nadar, retouching became routine, because sitters now demanded that the often harsh, direct Camera records of their features be softened, facial blemishes removed, and the wrinkles of age smoothed away. Besides the retouching of the negative, the prints were often tinted or painted over with opaque pigments; each major studio usually employed several artists as "colorists."
The photographs are direct and penetrating, as raw as le sordid scenes that they so often represent. Riis nerringly chose the Camera stance that would most lectively tell the story. There are glimpses in his second ook, Children of the Poor, of his experiences:et even from Hell's Kitchen had I not long before been riven forth with my Camera by a band of angry women, ho pelted me with brickbats and stones on my retreat, louting at me never to come back.
In order to accomplish this, the breeder must keep accurate records of births and weights at various ages. With these records he can then sort out his best cattle, save them for breeding stock, and send the rest to market. The keeping of these records of performance is not presently a general practice among beef cattle breeders, but the more progressive breeders either keep their own records or belong to an organization which does it for them. |
