Church In London: These remained die major divisions of the church until the Reformation of the 16th century. After this time many Christians of die Church of Rome separated into dissenting denominations or sects, each of which came to be known as a particular church (Anglican Church; Presbyterian Church; Methodist Church). Each remained widiin die Christian tradition but proclaimed a distinctive creed and ritual. Similar divisions within the Eastern Church emerged as die Armenian Church, the Coptic Church, and the Orthodox Church.
Most of the Reformed leaders escaped Alva's reign of terror by fleeing the country. In the German city of Wesel there were a sufficient number to hold a synod in 1568. This synod is reckoned as the first in the history of the Netherlands Reformed Church. The Heidelberg Catechism (q.v.), written for use in the Palatinate in 1563, was recommended for use in the Dutch congregations. The liturgy prepared by Peter Datheen (Petrus Dathenus), based on that used by the Dutch Church in London, was also accepted by the church.
Stratford. London is the capital of the British character. Stratford-on-Avon is the seat of the British—or more specifically, the English—soul. Stratford, in Warwickshire, 90 miles (140 km) west of London, is in most ways a characteristic small market center of the West Midlands, with a good parish church, some friendly pubs, and a pleasant, slow-moving river. |
