British Museum Riley: Riley was court painter to William and Mary. The National Portrait Gallery in London has his portraits of James II; Edmund Waller, the poet; Bishop Burnet; Lord Crewe, bishop of Durham; William, Lord Russell. Jonathan Richardson was his pupil and married his niece. Portraits of Riley and his wife, Jochebed, drawn by Richardson are in the print room of the British museum RILEY Museum

His ver occupies a unique niche in American literatui Not only in America, but in all the world ha' children claimed James Whitcomb Riley as the own. Mr. Riley never married, but he was lover of children, whose spirit he divined so int mately, and of family life.

Since that date many special editions of Riley's works have been printed until the total numbers 70. The Biographical Edition of his complete works was published in 1913.
In 1910 Riley experienced an illness t brought him very near death. In the next y his birthday was celebrated in the schools Indiana and of New York City. In 1912 the c< bration became more wide-spread, and Greenfii his birthplace, gave him a "Riley Day." In 1 the school children of Indianapolis paraded f his home on Lockerbie street, and Riley d were held at Anderson, Indiana University, ; Cincinnati, Ohio, which places he visited. |
