British Museum And Local: There was a growing interest in recording custom and manners, particularly those that were becoming obsolete. Sir Benjamin Stone, a member of the British Parliament, devoted his fortune to producing an extensive photographic survey of the folk festivals in his country and the life of the English peasantry. He appealed to amateurs to conduct photographic surveys of their home areas—historic buildings, landscapes, ceremonies, the life of the people. In 1897 he founded the National Photographic Record Association with the goal of depositing prinn the British Museum and local libraries.
The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City organize local and national competitions in water colors. The International Water Color Exhibition Biennials are held at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, and similar shows are held in the Art Institute, Chicago, 111., and other major museums.
