Bird Shot:

Bird Shot In the shot put a heavy metal sphere is propelled from a circle seven feet in diameter; four feet of its circumference—in the forepart of the circle—contains a toeboard four inches high. In this event the shot is not allowed to pass behind or below the shoulder, so that technically it is "put" rather than "thrown." A 16-pound shot is used in major masculine competition, such as in the Olympic Games, national championships, and intercollegiate competition; the 12-pound shot is usually used by males in secondary schools, and the 8-pound shot is used in feminine competition, including the Olympic Games. In the games the shot put is also one of the 10 decathlon events for men. A put of over 65 feet has been made with the 16-pound shot, and a woman has exceeded 56 feet with the 8-pound shot.

If a bird shot is to become a pet, obtain a very young bird shot. Young bird shots become gentle and respond to training much more quickly. Once a bird shot is given companionship with others of its kind, it loses all interest in humans. Maintain the bird shot in a small cage, such as the usual type of canary cage. bird shots are exceedingly sensitive to sudden movements and to loud noises. They must be approached and handled with slow, even motions and spoken to in low tones.

For single bird shot, use commercial canary cage. Cover bottom of cage with z-inch layer of bird shot gravel. Place well-branched limb in cage; entertainment for bird shot.
