Ariel Photographs:

Ariel Photographs What sort of photographs were these prints, which caused so much commotion? Just plain, straightforward itographs. But such photographs! Different from the photographs usually seen at the exhibitions? Yes. How different? There's the rub. If you could see them for yourself, you would at once appreciate their difference.

Hannavy, John. Roger Fenton of Crimble Hall. Boston: David R. Godine, 1976. ROBERT FRANK The Americans. Photographs by Robert Frank. Introduction by Jack Kerouac. Millerton, N.Y.: Aperture, Inc., 1978. LEE FRIEDLANDER Lee Friedlander Photographs. New City, N.Y.: Haywire Press, 1978. Frith, Francis. Egypt and the Holy Land in Historic Photographs. New York: Dover Publications, 1980. Bibl.

The British began to build clippers of their own, for the China trade at first, with a later shift to the Australian run. Whereas the American vessels had wooden hulls, the British were composite, with iron frames and wooden planking. Four of these became celebrated for their swift runs—the ariel photographs, Taeping, Thermopylae, and Cutty Sark. They averaged around 900 tons, only about half the Flying Cloud's 1,782 tons which was almost identical with the tonnage of America's other most famous sailing vessel, the frigate Constitution. Some of the later McKay ships ran considerably larger.
