Appearing In London In 1899: In 1893-1903 he was professor of piano at the Maryinsky Institute for Girls at Moscow, meantime acting as conductor at the Moscow Private Opera in 1897-1899; and appearing in London in 1899 at the Philharmonic Society's concerts, where he distinguished himself as composer, conductor and pianist. He conducted the Moscow Imperial Theatre in 1904-1906, and afterward devoted himself to composition and concert tours. In 1918 he took up his residence in the United States.
REID, SIR Thomas Wemyss, English journalist: b. Newcastle-on-Tyne, 29 March 1842; d. London, 26 Feb. 1905. He contributed frequently to English reviews and magazines, edited the Leeds Mercury (1870-87) and The Speaker from 1890 to 1899, when he resigned. He was knighted in 1904. He was the author of 'Cabinet Portraits: Sketches of Leading-Statesmen of Both Parties' (1872); 'Charlotte Bronte: A Monograph' (1877) ; 'The Land of the Bey> (1882); 'Mauleverer's Millions' (1885); and 'Lives' of W. E. Forster (1888), Lord Houghton (1890), Lord Playfair (1899), Gladstone (1899) and William Black (1902). His 'Memoirs,' edited by his brother, were published in 1905.
REUTER, BARON Paul Julius von (original name ISRAEL BEER JOSAPHAT), news-agency pioneer: b. Kassel, Germany luly 21, 1816; d. Nice, France, Feb. 25, 1899. In 1849 he established a connection by pigeon post between Aachen, Germany, and Verviers, Belgium, the terminals of the German and Belgian telegraph systems. In 1851 he removed to London, where he undertook to supply the London papers with commercial intelligence from the Continent. |
